Hypophyseal-pituitary-adrenal axis in autoimmune and rheumatic diseases.
This article discusses the effects of sex steroids and anterior pituitary hormones on the immune system. Data from clinical and experimental studies on the effects of CRH, FSH, LH, and prolactin are reviewed. This is followed by a summary of results from our studies on the effects of FSH, LH, and prolactin on PBMC, CD4+ cells, and CD8+ cells in vitro.
متن کاملPredictive modeling of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis response to acute and chronic stress.
Detailed dynamics of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is complex, depending on the individual metabolic load of an organism, its current status (healthy/ill, circadian phase (day/night), ultradian phase) and environmental impact. Therefore, it is difficult to compare the HPA axis activity between different individuals or draw unequivocal conclusions about the overall status of the...
متن کاملLeptin inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in response to stress.
Leptin is a newly identified protein hormone that is synthesized and secreted by adipose tissue. Absence of the mature hormone is responsible for the obese phenotype of ob/ob mice. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) is activated in ob/ob mice, and chronic administration of leptin to ob/ob mice decreases plasma corticosterone levels, suggesting that the adipose hormone is capable of ...
متن کاملFunctional development of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-adrenal cortex axis in the chick embryo, Gallus domesticus.
Basal plasma levels of corticosterone increased gradually during the second half of incubation, reaching a peak around the time of hatching. Stress resulted in a very significant elevation of corticosterone above the basal level in embryos 16 days or older, but not in younger embryos. Newly hatched chicks did not respond to stress, but a typical stress response was evident one week after hatchi...
متن کاملDevelopmental aspects of the pituitary-adrenal axis response to hemorrhagic stress in lamb fetuses in utero.
Plasma ACTH and corticosteroid concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay in chronically catheterized fetuses of 32 pregnant sheep. Fetal plasma ACTH levels 38+/-5 pg/ml (means+/-SEM) were slightly (P < 0.05) lower than maternal 54+/-4 pg/ml levels. No general rise in fetal plasma ACTH concentration was noted before 140 days gestation; however, fetal plasma corticoid levels began to incre...
